The Winning Trio ~ Mott – Rosario – Close Hatches

He started training thoroughbreds at the age of fifteen and was inducted to the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame by the age of forty-five, being the second youngest trainer after D. M Smithwick who was forty-two years old when he received the induction.  This American horse trainer is mostly known for his work with Cigar, a champion stallion, giving him n-number of wins throughout his career.

William Mott’s winning titles include 9 titles at Saratoga Race Course, 10 titles at Belmont Park and 9 again at Gulfstream Park. He is also recorded with 54 Churchill Downs victories at a single meet! Ranking 5th among the top 10 trainers in the world (referring to my last blog). If you are wondering why I am so fascinated by this trainer is because of his recent victory  after his three consecutive tries – Close Hatches who captured  the Mother Goose Stakes (GR 1) on June 22,2013 at Belmont Park, defeating Dreaming Of Julia by 7 ¼ lengths.  Having a considerable pedigree; sired by First Defence and Dam Rising Tornado, she ran to victory to capture the race from the three-eight pole. Mott declares that “she trains like she had a race like that in her” – horseracingnations.  Placing 7th at the Kentucky Oaks, 2nd at the Acorn – G1 race and finally throttling through victory at the Mother Goose, one might say that the game of horse racing gets unpredictable with each race!

Joel Rosario who jockeyed Close Hatches is also noted to be at the peak of his career, so to say! Equaling a Hollywood Park Race track record by winning 6 races on a single race card, makes him the “Dominican” jockey of American Thoroughbred racing.  Among his other winnings is the world’s richest horse race of 10 million dollar at the Dubai World Cup at Meydan race course on March 30, 2013.

So to say, it takes the combined effort of the three main characters of horse racing to bring in the winning trophy – The Trainer – The Jockey – The Race Horse. Clearly the partnership of the three here seems to be at its best at the moment.  Absolutely waiting for the ‘Trio’ to come out as victors soon!

Go! Mott – Rosario – Close Hatches!!
